One of my most trusted places to dine. Quietly nestled at the end of the Royal Mile, it is consistent, composed, and never in need of spectacle. It offers a perfect blend of relaxed charm, excellent wines, and a menu that is always evolving. The ever-changing small plates are a real highlight, designed for sharing and full of bold, inventive flavours that keep you coming back.

On a recent visit, we sampled a beautifully balanced dish of compressed watermelon with ponzu and avocado — light, fresh, and full of zing.

The sea trout was delicately cooked, and the venison skewers were rich and perfectly seasoned. Every plate reflected real thought and finesse.

Head chef Owen Morrice is doing outstanding work and is a brilliant fit for this kitchen. The food is exciting yet approachable, with seasonal ingredients always at the forefront. A newly launched midweek Chef’s Menu offers two courses and a glass of wine for just £25, which feels generous without trying too hard.

The service is as warm and considered as the food. Neil, a familiar and trusted presence since day one, delivers hospitality with sincerity. Co-owner Murray Ainslie strikes just the right balance — friendly, present, and never intrusive. This is a place for laid-back good times and seriously good food.
