If you’re looking for somewhere quiet and romantic to unwind with someone special, Caru by Candlelight is definitely worth a visit. With just six tables, it’s an intimate space that feels personal and relaxed not the sort of place for a quick bite, but rather an evening to savour. This sweet little bar is tucked beneath one of the arches on East Market Street and truly lives up to its name.

That said, it feels more suited to an after-work drink or a relaxed catch-up than a full evening out. They offer a range of brandies, wines, and cocktails, along with a simple charcuterie board which, while pleasant, could do with a little more finesse.

We were treated to a small sample of Caru brandy liqueur created by owner Emily Richards during lockdown and named after the Welsh word for “love.”

They also host wine tastings and we were lucky enough to attend one led by the lovely Neil from Terroir Vines as well as live music, sketch-and-sip sessions, and even murder mystery events planned in the coming months.

A charming spot that captures the spirit of Edinburgh’s hidden gems warm, welcoming, and full of heart.
